The councilors of the Popular Party in the Teguise City Council, Jonás Álvarez and Nieves Arrocha, have presented a motion to the plenary session in which they urge the signing of an agreement with the owner of the land of the Famara mill to be able to carry out its recovery and conservation.

“We believe that an intervention in the area should be marked as a priority by the Teguise City Council in order to recover that part of the history of our municipality, which is even semi-buried,” says the municipal spokesperson, Jonás Álvarez. “Knowing that this historical complex is located on private property, we are proposing to reach an agreement, or even sign an agreement, that allows us to recover the mill in this Del Pozo area, where the pools were also located, and that for many years was a symbol of the town of La Caleta at the entrance to it.”

In the motion, the Populars collect the role played for the residents of La Caleta by this well that supplied them with water for the house and animals, and to which women went to wash clothes.

“In a certain way, the mill and the well are part of the traditional culture of the municipality to the point that the area was included in the protection catalog of elements of heritage interest of the ill-fated Master Plan for Use and Management (PRUG) of the Chinijo Archipelago”, argue the PP councilors in their proposal.

“The reality is that in recent years this historical complex has suffered significant degradation, both due to the passage of time and the weather conditions in the area, without having been able to maintain and much less recover it”, says Álvarez.

The Populars recall that already in 2017, the Cabildo allocated 100,000 euros for the restoration of the mill, rebuilding the stone wall and rehabilitating the well and the pools, “but it was never executed”. “It would be very positive for the legacy and heritage values of the municipality that the recovery of the mill that has been carried out in Teguise could be completed with the structure of Caleta de Famara, another of the hallmarks of our municipality”, proposes the councilor of the Popular Party.
