The Popular Party of Haría has denounced "the poor condition of the palm trees in the municipality, where this plant species is precisely a symbol and emblem."
"To the problems that the palm grove of the Haría valley has been suffering for years, mainly due to water stress, which has reduced the number of specimens to about 2,000, is now added the fear of the advance of the Diacalandra plague throughout the island," warn the populars.
Precisely for this reason, and for the danger that this represents, the populars affirm that they do not understand "why the City Council does not intensify the care of the palm trees that are on the sides of the roads and in garden areas of the municipality, which currently have a truly regrettable appearance."
David Álvarez Muñoz, a member of the local committee of the PP, points out that the situation of the palm trees is certainly worrying in towns such as Punta Mujeres, "which, as far as is known, has not been included within the points affected by the plague."
With respect to this coastal nucleus, “the image they offer is one of total abandonment, with completely dry specimens or full of unpruned branches”, he affirms, pointing out that "a very similar situation" is experienced in the prelude to the towns of Haría and Máguez. “It is a paradox that one of the singularities that the town of Haría has for visitors is its extensive palm grove and it turns out that what tourists find before arriving, and as a presentation, is a space of totally neglected palm trees, full of dry branches on the ground and also covering even the traffic signs themselves, which are no longer visible.”
“The feeling is that we are letting them die little by little and that we have resigned ourselves to it”, laments David Álvarez, who cannot explain "how it is possible that the municipal government is letting itself go so much in this matter."
“Surely the City Council does not have the resources to face the maintenance of the Haría valley palm grove alone and needs the support of the rest of the administrations such as the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands, but what the municipal government must do is get to work with the palm trees that are on the margins, in parks and garden areas, which it can and should perfectly assume its care”, demand from the Popular Party.
