The PP denounces that the Cabildo is planning to "permanently close" the Los Hervideros road to traffic

Jacobo Medina, who was Minister of Public Works when the road had to be closed due to landslides, says that "this possibility would reduce mobility for the residents of El Golfo"

The Popular Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has warned of the intention that it claims the government of Dolores Corujo has to "permanently close the LZ 703, the Los Hervideros road, to traffic, which connects with the town of El Golfo."

The road has been closed since February 2021, when a landslide occurred on a section of the road. The head of Public Works was then a PP councilor, Jacobo Medina, who remained in office until five months ago, without the works that had been announced being carried out. Medina then blamed Costas, for having rejected the project they started, and shortly before being dismissed he stated that the work that they could finally do would only be "a patch".

Now, from the opposition, the councilor defends the importance of keeping the road open to traffic "exploring all the technical possibilities", which is what he claims "was being worked on before leaving the area." According to a statement, "after the rejection by Costas of the arrangement proposed at the time via the emergency route, a preliminary market consultation was chosen to gather information and proposals on the type of viable solutions for the repair of the road", which "must be carried out within the same layout and without invading the maritime-terrestrial zone in order to overcome the obstacle posed by the Demarcation of Coasts."

According to the Popular Party, opting to permanently close this road to traffic "goes against the interests of the residents of El Golfo, since they lose one of the most direct connections they have with the town of Playa Blanca, substantially reducing their mobility options and increasing their disconnection with the town."

“We are facing a road that is not only important for the residents of El Golfo and the municipality of Yaiza in general, but also has a strategic relevance from a tourist point of view as it is the access point to Los Hervideros, a unique natural environment of interest to those tourists who visit us,” says Medina.

For the Popular Party, "what the current government of the Cabildo cannot do is throw in the towel at the first sign of trouble and opt for the easiest route, which is to close the road to traffic, with the damage that this entails."
