Following the brawl that occurred this Sunday in Marina Lanzarote, which resulted in three injuries, one of them with cuts to the neck, and with one person arrested as the alleged perpetrator of the assault and gender violence against his partner, the Local Police Councilor of Arrecife has expressed "concern" about the situation that is being experienced in some nightlife areas of the capital.
“Last weekend, the Police carried out a search of people who were drinking, and many people carry a knife in their pocket,” Jacobo Lemes said on Radio Lanzarote – Onda Cero. The councilor acknowledges that he does not know “how they are going to be able to cover La Marina”, given the lack of personnel in the Local Police of Arrecife.
“We are stretching the gum, giving more than 2,000 monthly overtime hours to the Police. They sign up for those hours voluntarily, it is true that they get paid, but they are not obliged to be on the street at those hours,” explains the Police Councilor, who acknowledges that they must “reinforce” the area, but stresses that they “cannot only cover La Marina”.
“I am going to contact the commissioner this week, we have a good relationship and good predisposition. We have to start tackling La Marina and La Inés street, which are the leisure spots that are currently giving us problems,” he says.
“It cannot be that going out for leisure becomes a battle”
“These are isolated incidents, but they are repeated once a month and we cannot allow it,” adds the councilor, referring to the situation in Marina Lanzarote. Regarding the capital as a whole, he states that episodes of assault with knives are “often” being seen. “We have to work to prevent this from happening, with the Local Police controlling the area,” says Jacobo Lemes.
“There should be a security guard in La Marina, but there is also the Port Police, who will have to get a little more involved,” points out the councilor, who acknowledges that they will have to find a way to make them more present.
“What cannot be is that going out for leisure becomes a pitched battle or what we are seeing. The event this Sunday was quite serious,” emphasizes the councilor, recalling that one of the people ended up in the hospital with cuts to the neck.
