The Lanzarote Podemos Feminism Circle, of which deputy María del Río is secretary, has decided to report to the party's Guarantees Commission the case of the cartoon published on the satirical website El Agitador, of which its councilor in the Cabildo, Carlos Meca, has been director for years. Cartoon in which, they recall from this body of the purple formation, the faces of the island president of the PP, Ástrid Pérez, and the president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, appeared inserted in the poster of the film 'Why do they call it love when they mean sex' "in obviously sexualized attitudes" although in this case under the title Why do they call them optimal levels of management when what they mean is sex?.
"Regardless of what each person understands by humor, satire, or freedom of expression, without entering into that topic that would lead us to a long and complex debate, what concerns us in this case is that we are not talking about a cartoon published in any humor magazine, it is a publication directed by a colleague, and that the author or person responsible for these cartoons is a prominent public official of Podemos, councilor of the Island Council of Lanzarote and still secretary of the highest island body, the Citizen Council", they point out from the Secretariat of Feminisms, Equality and LGTBI of Podemos Canarias, from where they have sent a statement announcing the decision of the Lanzarote Podemos Feminism Circle, supporting and joining the proposal to raise the case to the Guarantees Commission.
The statement affirms that the decision to report the events to the Guarantees Commission, the body in charge of ensuring compliance with the party's code of ethics, taking the measures necessary for this, was taken on Sunday afternoon after the Lanzarote Podemos Feminism Circle met in assembly, "not being the first time that these publications have been addressed by this Circle and given their recurrence".
"We think that political criticism can be done in another way, and beyond the hypocrisy and political opportunism of some island forces that are now tearing their clothes, we denounce with sadness, but also with forcefulness, how machismo continues to strongly permeate our institutions. How from the most conservative to the most progressive, a common link unites representatives of all powers and from all areas, Justice, Culture, Sciences, Media, and also the political one, a space that women are finding it very difficult to reach, and even more so, to occupy positions of relevance", they point out from the Secretariat of Feminisms, Equality and LGTBI of Podemos Canarias.
"We are not going to allow exceptions"
From this Secretariat they consider that "there is much work to be done", but they state that they are not going to allow "exceptions". "The more just and egalitarian society, free of machismo, to which we aspire and that we want for the outside, for the whole society, we also want it for within our organization. We know that it is not an easy path, that we must be very aware and fight with great force to break and get rid of the macho and patriarchal structures, so deeply rooted and naturalized, that sometimes we do not even see them, but that shape our thinking, inspiring and justifying our behaviors", they point out.
Likewise, they invite the party comrades "to put on their purple glasses". "Those that, although some of you do not understand, make us position ourselves in the defense of the dignity of a comrade, deputy of another party, above the actions of a comrade of our own." "Being a feminist is a common cause that unites us in the fight for the rights of all women, without exclusion. Podemos is a feminist party and that is why and for that we are here, to defend with coherence the principles in which we firmly believe", the statement concludes.
