The Platform of People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) has occupied Banco Santander, on León y Castillo street, to try to stop the eviction of a resident of Arrecife and her 17-year-old son. The National Police has entered the bank branch, but has not evicted it. The members of the PAH assure that they will not leave until the bank gives them the document to stop the eviction, which will be carried out on the 20th of this month if they fail to stop it.
The members of this platform have denounced that this bank is going to leave "another family on the street again." "Caty and her son will be deprived of a place to live on the 20th of this month if we don't all fix it. We are here today because, according to the Constitution, we all have the right to housing and this bank is going to take away a right from Caty and her son, a fundamental right of any human being," they said in a statement.
From the PAH they want to make it clear that they are not asking "for a house to be given to them", but that they are "freed from the responsibility they acquired when signing a contract". "She is already paying for her mistake, she has lost her house and all the money she invested in it", they insisted. The woman could no longer afford the mortgage and, therefore, the bank "sold the debt to a vulture fund and they will evict her on the 20th", according to a member of the PAH told La Voz.
The members of this platform have asked this bank to "take charge of its part of the responsibility", in the face of a contract "plagued with abusive and illegal clauses". "We are not asking you to lose money and business for doing your job badly. We are giving you a valid solution for them and for Caty", he indicated.
The solution proposed by the PAH is that the bank keep the ownership of the home of this resident of Arrecife, "which at the present time it will be impossible to sell badly", and forgive the debt by offering her social rent.
"The bank will ensure income and a property in good condition", defended the platform, which aims to prevent "armed men from being sent to Caty's house to forcibly kick her and her son out". "We want neither Caty, nor her son, nor anyone to have to spend a single night on the street," the platform insisted.
