The City Council of Arrecife has incorporated into its Local Police staff six new police officers after concluding their training process at the Canarian Security Academy, as determined by legislation to take possession as career civil servants.

The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, direct head of the Local Police, has presided over this swearing-in ceremony that has recently taken place in the plenary hall of the Arrecife City Council. With these six new agents, the Local Police force strengthens its human resources for security and surveillance in the capital of Lanzarote, with Arrecife, according to data from the Ministry of Interior, being the only one on the island of Lanzarote where crimes are decreasing.

Eight other new police officer positions announced in the BOE

Furthermore, the Arrecife Local Police Force will be effectively increased in 2026 with eight new police officers, whose positions have already been published in the BOE. The City Council, for greater agility in these incorporations, has availed itself of the “Simplified Annual Call” carried out by the Ministry of Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security of the Public Administration of the Government of the Canary Islands.

In the «Official Gazette of the Canary Islands» number 215, of October 30, 2025, the Resolution of October 20, 2025, has been published, by which the bases of the third unified annual call for entry are approved, through the general system of free access, for positions belonging to the Basic Scale, Police, Group C, Subgroup C1, from several Municipalities of the Canary Islands, and the corresponding selective tests are called.

Internal promotion underway for the promotion of seven officers

Recently, the Arrecife City Council received the backing of Justice, ratifying the legality and validity of the OPE, which was appealed by UGT. Justice ruled that this process of creating positions conforms to law, and has allowed the City Council's Human Resources Department to recently continue with this process.

Thus, for next March 16, the Qualifying Tribunal has been convened for the promotion, by internal promotion, of seven new officer positions. The mayor has announced that among his objectives is to continue reinforcing the Local Police force, and after this internal promotion, these seven positions can be filled by a service commission process, making it possible for officers from other municipalities to arrive for these reinforcements.

Yonathan de León pointed out in his inauguration as mayor of the city, in July 2023, that "one of his priorities would be focused on security and surveillance." Thus, during these first two years of mandate, new positions have been filled, in addition to the modernization of the Local Police Force with technological means and vehicles, as well as the creation of new units with high results in security matters, such as the Tutor Agents, or the Anti-Squatter Unit of the Local Police.

The staff of the Local Police of Arrecife is formed by 85 officers, as stated in the annex of the municipal budgets for 2025 published in the BOP.
