The Las Palmas Food Bank, a non-profit association, has opened a storage facility in the Altavista neighborhood (Arrecife) to supply the 11 organizations on the Island that are dedicated to providing food to people without economic resources. The association has a headquarters in each province and is federated with similar associations in Europe.
Since September 15, more than 20,000 kilos have been received in Lanzarote, half of which have already been distributed. It is estimated that there are about 6,500 people on the Island who will benefit from this food.
This organization collects food, both from the aid managed each year by the European Union, and from companies dedicated to food. All the work is done by volunteers (there are four in Lanzarote), both to attract more food and to distribute it to associations.
The opening of the premises was attended by the President of the Canary Islands Government, Paulino Rivero, the Minister of Social Welfare, Inés Rojas and five of the seven mayors of the Island, as well as the Island Director of the General State Administration, among other authorities. The Government of the Canary Islands finances the rent of the premises and acts as an intermediary between the association and some companies.
