The Island Water Council of Lanzarote published this Thursday in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) the announcement of the start of the procedures to obtain authorization for the sanitation project of the town of El Golfo, municipality of Yaiza. This important project aims to improve the hydraulic infrastructures of the area, guaranteeing an efficient and environmentally friendly sanitation system.
The announcement in the BOC marks the first step in the administrative process necessary to carry out this action, which is considered essential to preserve the quality of the natural environment of the coastal town.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, who also presides over the Council, has declared: "After the administrative paralysis of the previous mandate, in which it remained blocked for years, we are going to comply with the deadlines set by the Ministry for the execution of this important work, and not have to lose the financing of one million euros for the project."
This demanded infrastructure will include the construction of a modern sanitation network that will allow for the proper management of wastewater, thus contributing to the well-being of the population and the care of the fragile ecosystem of the area. "This project is a priority within our action plans in terms of water infrastructure, and its implementation will be key to ensuring sustainable development on the island," the president said.
The authorization process opens a period of public display, in which both organizations and citizens may submit allegations or suggestions, which ensures a transparent and participatory process. It is expected that, after the administrative phase, the works can begin in the coming months, contributing to the economic boost of the town and the improvement of the quality of life of its inhabitants.
For his part, the Minister of Water, Domingo Cejas, thanked the work carried out in recent months by the technical team of the Water Consortium and the Island Water Council of Lanzarote, "who have been working at full speed" to comply with the directive marked by the president of both bodies and the Island Corporation, in order to expedite and prioritize the processing of files subject to deadlines and that were at risk of losing funding. "We have accelerated this important file for the inhabitants of El Golfo, a procedure that since May 2021 was pending the approval of its Environmental Assessment Report. In a few months, this government group has done the work and the Cabildo is already starting the procedures for the authorization of the sanitation project of El Golfo."
Avoid spills into the environment
With this project, the Island Water Council "reaffirms its commitment to the modernization of Lanzarote's water infrastructures, a line of work that is taking shape in the execution of new projects and that aligns with the sustainability and environmental protection policies that are promoting the current government of the Cabildo".
The project defines and assesses the necessary works for the bidding and subsequent execution of all the elements that are required for the execution of the works of a new sewerage system and the new El Golfo WWTP.
Currently, the nucleus of El Golfo lacks such infrastructures, which means that the wastewater from the resident population and the establishments for restoration automatically becomes waste into the environment, through the use of septic tanks.
An infrastructure of this type will allow the proper collection, channeling, promotion and treatment of wastewater collected from the various homes and businesses in the area. The background of this project dates back to December 2017.
