The Cabildo of Lanzarote has signed a historic sponsorship agreement for the Insular Lucha Canaria League, an agreement that is materialized through SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, an entity that allocates 75,000 euros to the promotion, visibility, and strengthening of a discipline deeply rooted in the island's cultural identity.
The agreement, signed this Thursday at the headquarters of the Cabildo alongside the Insular Federation of Canarian Wrestling of Lanzarote, represents a decisive step towards guaranteeing the development of the season, strengthening clubs, improving competitions, and the public projection of the native sport both at the island and regional levels.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, emphasized that this agreement "is not just economic support, but a firm commitment to our roots." "Lucha Canaria is part of our collective memory, of our way of relating to each other and of understanding island identity. Protecting it, strengthening it, and giving it projection is a public responsibility, which is why with this agreement we are putting resources, structure, and a vision for the future at the service of a sport that symbolizes values we want to continue transmitting: respect, nobility, roots, and community."
In addition, Betancort recalled that "this step fits into the cultural and social roadmap of the Cabildo, which seeks to integrate the preservation of the material and immaterial heritage of the territory into its policies." And he announced that the Centers for Art, Culture, and Tourism will also contribute a significant amount to the cause.
An agreement coordinated through SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote
The formalization of the sponsorship contract - signed between the CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, Héctor Fernández Manchado, and the president of the Insular Federation, Marcos de León Díaz - reinforces the strategic collaboration between both entities.
The agreement regulates funding, the execution of the sports season, and the Federation's obligation to generate impact reports, memorandums, features, and dissemination content that allow for the promotion of Lucha Canaria as a cultural asset of Lanzarote.
"Canarian Wrestling is part of Lanzarote's narrative, and supporting it makes sense from a social, sporting, and also promotional perspective. This agreement contributes to making our native sport part of the image that Lanzarote projects: an island that cares for its identity, respects its traditions, and promotes activities with a real impact on its social fabric," explained Héctor Fernández, CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote. For his part, the president of the Insular Federation of Lanzarote, Marcos de León, highlighted the importance of the agreement for the stability and growth of the sport. "This support from the Cabildo and SPEL allows us to consolidate the insular league and continue working with the clubs, schools, and grassroots. Lucha Canaria needs stability and resources to grow, and today we take a decisive step.""We are deeply grateful that the effort of our athletes and the cultural value that this sport represents for Lanzarote are recognized," added de León.
