The Lanzarote family that survived the Costa Concordia shipwreck will request more than 360,000 euros in compensation. Thus, they will ask for about 120,000 euros for each of the affected members of this family, that is, for the married couple and their young son. This figure could increase to 140,000 euros per person.
Teresa Curbelo, Benito González, and Pablo, eight years old, boarded the Costa Concordia to spend a nice vacation, which turned into a nightmare. Therefore, the couple has rejected the compensation of 11,000 euros that the company offered to each affected person. "This compensation was a pittance, especially because if you accepted it, you could not sue either the captain of the ship or the company. Nobody accepted this claim," Teresa Curbelo told La Voz.
"There is a Catalan lady who will no longer be able to walk and you cannot offer her 11,000 euros when this trip has changed her life. In my case, we have psychological after-effects, especially the child who continues to have nightmares," Teresa explained.
These three survivors belong to the platform of Spanish victims of the Costa Concordia, which brings together more than 80 people, and which are defended by a famous law firm in Barcelona. Teresa Curbelo assures that in Spain this shipwreck "has been forgotten" and that the survivors "have not found help" from the Spanish authorities.
"From the platform, they have been sending me videos of the shipwreck, of the people who recorded from inside the ship. You realize all the negligence that occurred and you don't understand how something so serious could have happened. It makes me very angry that this issue has been forgotten in Spain," said Teresa Curbelo, who hopes that "all those involved" will pay their responsibilities.
