The Cabildo of Lanzarote, during the plenary session held this Monday, has approved declaring the island as a space of freedom for LGTBI people, following the declaration of the European Union as a zone of freedom for this group. In addition, the Corporation also undertakes to promote public policies that promote and protect the rights of LGTBI people and that explicitly sanction structural discrimination mechanisms.
The institutional declaration, at the request of the PSOE Group, was unanimously supported by all groups, and represents "a recognition of the fundamental rights established in the Treaties of the European Union, also with regard to sexual orientation", as stated by the socialist spokesperson, Marcos Bergaz.
The councilor stressed, during his speech, "that LGBTI people in the European Union continue to suffer a higher rate of discrimination in all areas of life, including the workplace and school, with a high prevalence of physical, emotional and sexual attacks, both in the virtual and real world, which leads to a worrying suicide rate among LGBTI youth and, especially, among transgender youth."
The fight against inequality in the European Union is a shared responsibility, which requires joint efforts and actions at all levels of government and, in particular, by local and regional entities, which are called upon to play a key role in this regard, as they are responsible for applying three quarters of European Union legislation and promoting equality and diversity.
The Cabildo plenary also approved condemning the action of the Polish and Hungarian governments against the rights of LGBTI people, which manifestly violate the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as any other form of discrimination against LGBTI people.
Finally, and coinciding with Pride Month, which is celebrated this June, the Cabildo will fly the rainbow flag on the facade of the first Institution.
