The Biosphere Reserve of the Island Council of Lanzarote will promote a transformation and improvement project of the Molino de Cabo Pedro environment in the La Vega neighborhood in Arrecife. This plot occupies about 8,000 square meters and its development will have the contribution of the College of Architects of Lanzarote. In addition, the initiative is open to citizen participation.

With the acquisition of this well-known space, which dates from the late nineteenth century and has a very important section in the history of Arrecife, as it was closely linked to the trade of the barilla, the Island Council of Lanzarote -in collaboration with the City Council of Arrecife- will prevent its urban development, and will create a green area, recovering part of the heritage of Arrecife.

To this end, the president Oswaldo Betancort, convened this Thursday a working meeting that was attended by the island's vice president Jacobo Medina, the Minister of the Biosphere Reserve, Samuel Martín, as well as the mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, the deputy mayor, Echedey Eugenio, and the Councilor for Urban Planning, Maciot Cabrera.

“The ideas that arise from this open and participatory contest must provide solutions to issues such as parking, the creation of leisure and sports areas, the provision of playgrounds, among other improvements, always aligned with sustainability criteria”, said Oswaldo Betancort, stressing that “the transformation of the capital involves the provision of services that respond to the needs of the population of Arrecife”.

In this sense, the island's Minister of the Biosphere Reserve, Samuel Martín, considered that “this project will form a green lung in the center of the city, which will connect with the commercial area of Arrecife, such as León y Castillo street and the Charco de San Ginés, in addition to recovering a heritage asset”.

For his part, the mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, explained that “both administrations are already working in a coordinated manner for the creation of this new green and accessible space, which will recover a strategic area, which is currently neglected”. “We thank the Island Council of Lanzarote for its collaboration and the search for consensus”, he added.

The Deputy Mayor Echedey Eugenio and the Councilor for Urban Planning, Maciot Cabrera, also participated in the meeting to analyze the needs and possibilities of the Molino de Cabo Pedro environment, as well as the details and requirements of the ideas competition.
