The Lanzarote Health Services Management, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has consolidated the implementation of Centralized Technical Management (GTC), a platform that allows supervising and controlling the industrial and technical facilities of its health buildings and improves energy efficiency. This system, developed over the last 25 years by the Engineering and Maintenance service, currently has more than 500 equipment integrations and is implemented in the Molina Orosa Hospital, the Insular Hospital, in the Primary Care centers, and in the logistical buildings of the Management.

Centralized Technical Management, also known as BMS (Building Management System), allows centralized monitoring and management of essential systems for the operation of buildings, such as air conditioning, electricity supply, water installations, medical gases, or fire protection systems.

Although it is a technology that has been implemented in complex buildings for decades, its evolution has allowed its features to be progressively expanded and adapted to the needs of healthcare infrastructures. Within the Lanzarote Health Services Management, the system has experienced particularly significant growth over the last ten years, coinciding with the reforms, renovations, and improvements carried out in the two hospitals, health centers, and administrative facilities.

More than 500 integrations to supervise facilities

The platform brings together various types of technical installations and systems, allowing specialized personnel to have centralized information on their operation and to detect possible incidents. These include air conditioning and ventilation systems, environmental control of operating rooms, domestic hot water production, water distribution and treatment, medical gas distribution networks, water and electricity supply quality analyzers, photovoltaic installations, and uninterruptible power supply systems.

It also integrates other essential resources in healthcare activities, such as fire detection systems, pneumatic transport of laboratory samples, nursing calls on hospitalization floors, sterilization and cleaning equipment for surgical instruments, as well as monitoring the temperatures of Pharmacy and Blood Bank refrigerators.

This integration facilitates the supervision of facilities from a single platform, with information organized by systems and the ability to receive alerts for certain incidents. In this way, Engineering and Maintenance professionals can identify the problem and act quickly, which improves response capacity and guarantees service continuity, an aspect especially useful in Primary Care centers and administrative buildings far from the hospital.

Technology at the service of energy efficiency in healthcare centers

One of the main values of Centralized Technical Management is its contribution to energy efficiency. Continuous monitoring of consumption allows for the analysis of facility behavior, identification of potential inefficiencies, and study of measures aimed at reducing energy expenditure and associated emissions.

The system also allows for programming operating and shutdown schedules for certain equipment to avoid unnecessary consumption, control the status of facilities, and send notifications to technical personnel when critical alarms occur.

These functionalities contribute to optimizing the operation of healthcare buildings, improving resource utilization, and moving towards more sustainable management of public infrastructure.

Technical knowledge and team autonomy

The evolution of the GTC also reflects the specialized work developed by the professionals of the Engineering and Maintenance service. The platform allows for the supervision and management of all facilities integrated into the system. Furthermore, nearly 30% of the integrations have been designed and implemented by the technical staff themselves, which highlights the team's innovation capacity and reinforces their autonomy in adapting the system to the needs of each facility.

The platform uses standard and open communication protocols, such as Modbus and BACnet, which facilitate the integration of equipment from different manufacturers and reduce dependence on proprietary technological solutions.

After 25 years of development, Centralized Technical Management constitutes a fundamental tool for the supervision of the facilities of the Lanzarote Health Services Management. A technical work that, although not always visible to patients and users, contributes to the daily operation of health centers, the responsible use of energy, and the continuous improvement of the infrastructures where healthcare is provided.
