The Government of the Canary Islands has approved this Thursday a cooperation agreement with the Cabildo of Lanzarote to launch a plan to control and eradicate the palm weevil plague (Diocalandra frumenti) on the island.
The agreement will have a duration of four years and will have an investment of two million euros, divided equally between the autonomous community and the island corporation.
The objective is to establish the necessary phytosanitary measures to eliminate the presence of Diocalandra frumenti, a harmful insect that affects palm trees, particularly the Canary Island palm.
The actions to carry out this project will include the increase in the number of catches in the natural environment to control the expansion of this insect.
On the other hand, the dispersion of the plague and the appearance of new population centers in Lanzarote, as well as the colonization of other islands, will be avoided.
