This was approved this Monday at the Governing Council held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Current Status of the Hotel Oriental

The Governing Council has approved this Monday, March 18, in the session held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the decree by which the Oriental Hotel in Arrecife becomes part of the catalog of assets of cultural interest in the Canary Islands, holding the category of Monument.

The property, located at Calle León y Castillo 37 in the capital of Lanzarote, stands out for the architectural and historical values of the building, validated by the Cultural Heritage Council of the Canary Islands. It is one of the best examples of urban bourgeois architecture in Arrecife and also a building with high historical value. Known as the Oriental Hotel, it was founded by Claudio Toledo Cabrera in the early 20th century, and the first and only hotel of a certain rank that existed on the island of Lanzarote.

The establishment had a magnificent dining room with a window to the outside that was often frequented by the most important families of Lanzarote, as well as those distinguished people who visited the island. Important theater companies, magistrates, judges, merchants and illustrious families stayed there.

Its declaration is supported by various technical reports from entities and experts with arguments that abound in the intrinsic value of this property, as it is one of the most relevant examples of the traditional architecture of the island's capital.

The declaration of assets of cultural interest implies the conservation and protection of the same, because they represent the exceptional elements, both material and immaterial, of our collective memory that must endure in the best conditions.
