The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the UNESCO Global Geopark Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago, celebrates the first Anchialine Portal Congress, an important informative initiative promoted by this Area managed by the counselor Samuel Martín. The congress will take place this Friday, May 23, in the Assembly Hall of the Island Institution, in Arrecife, from 08.30 to 13.30 hours, with free admission until full capacity.

In the words of Samuel Martín, "this congress promotes science and the protection of our natural environment, and also gives international visibility to the uniqueness of our underground ecosystems. Anchialine portals are testimony to an exceptional natural wealth, and their study connects us with global scientific networks."

This event also represents the closing ceremony of the citizen science days dedicated to the study of anchialine ecosystems, coastal underground habitats of high ecological value, unique in the world and present in our island territory. For weeks, dozens of students from Lanzarote institutes, together with volunteer citizens, have actively participated in the counting of jameítos, the small endemic crustacean, as part of a pioneering scientific study.

Experts in biology, geology and marine ecology, among others

The Anchialine Portal Congress will bring together national and international experts in biology, geology, marine ecology and environmental management at the Cabildo of Lanzarote, who will share the latest advances in the research and conservation of these fragile and fascinating environments. The program includes master lectures, presentation of scientific communications and posters, as well as possible parallel activities aimed at environmental awareness.

Councilor Samuel Martín has also highlighted the involvement of the educational community. "It is especially gratifying to see so many young people get directly involved in scientific projects. This connection between professional science and citizenship is one of the pillars of the Geopark, and a fundamental path towards a more conscious and sustainable society."

The Lanzarote Anchialine Portal Congress is part of the program of calls for the European Geoparks Week 2025 and is part of the dissemination and participation actions that the Geopark promotes continuously, and is aligned with the UNESCO objectives of scientific education, sustainable development and preservation of natural heritage.
