The regional Executive of the Popular Party in the Canary Islands, which will be held this Wednesday, September 2, will not set a date for the insular Congress of the party in Lanzarote. The party, chaired to date by Ástrid Pérez (Popular Party), has not informed its affiliates if it will set the vote to renew the Presidency before the 2027 elections.
The Popular Party held its last Insular Congress in Lanzarote in 2021. At that time, Ástrid Pérez was re-elected as president of the PP.
This situation occurs in a context where the Popular Party has accumulated more than a year and a half of internal tensions. In January 2025, the party decided to strip its colleague Jacobo Medina of the vice-presidency of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Ministries of Planning and Project Coordination to give them to another PP member, María Jesús Tovar.
Two months later, in March 2025, Ástrid Pérez also decided to dismiss Jacobo Medina as general secretary of the Popular Party in Lanzarote and grant that position to María Jesús Tovar. Medina took it badly and remained in the party despite stating that he disagreed with the methods and that the party should "add people, not invite them to leave."
To date, Ástrid Pérez has not publicly announced if she will run for re-election, while her party colleague María Jesús Tovar stated during an interview on Radio Lanzarote that she would step forward if Pérez did not run. Meanwhile, Jacobo Medina stated at the beginning of summer that he felt strong enough to lead the PP's candidacy for the Cabildo again.
