The Lanzarote Water Consortium has sent a letter to the Court of First Instance requesting the suspension of the execution of the final judgment since 2018 that would leave the town of Órzola without a water supply from this Friday, "due to a lawsuit filed by Benjamín Perdomo, socialist councilor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, and his family."

“The Water Consortium, which includes the seven municipalities of the Island, including the three where the PSOE governs, addressed the Court in a letter presented on March 27 so that, in the general interest and while the approaches made by the entity are resolved, it suspends the one-month period initially granted and which would end this April 12, the extension of said period being crucial to offer an alternative solution in order to avoid the shortage in the town of Órzola”, says the president of the Cabildo and in turn of the Consortium, Oswaldo Betancort.

The president regrets that the property “has publicly announced its intention to close the valve this Friday” of the tank that supplies water to Órzola, without heeding the Consortium's request to grant it the necessary time to prepare a new file with a proposed agreement that allows it to continue supplying water to said town."

In this sense, the island's Minister of Water, Domingo Cejas, stresses that after the order issued by the Court “we have only had a month to solve an issue that the previous government did not resolve in four years, despite even reaching an agreement with the property that was not materialized because it was not signed.”

"The aforementioned agreement established the payment of 545,000 euros by the Lanzarote Water Consortium, chaired by the socialist Dolores Corujo, to the socialist councilor Benjamín Perdomo and his family for the purchase of the entire 174,878 square meter farm, despite the fact that the deposit, built more than 40 years ago, occupies an area of 842 square meters and the pipes through which the water flows only occupy just over 720 square meters, so the Cabildo would not need 173,325 square meters of the total area of the farm," they add.

“The Water Consortium, for its part, values alternatives that offer a supply solution to the residents of Órzola without participating in the waste of public funds planned by the previous Corporation”, says Domingo Cejas.
