The Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Directorate General of Road Infrastructure, headed by Rosana Melián, has uniquely and definitively approved the construction project for the expansion of the underpass of the LZ-2 at Camino de Los Fajardo, in the municipality of Tías, an action that will improve road safety, functionality, and capacity of this infrastructure on the island of Lanzarote.
The project has a base tender budget of 2,958,673.83 euros, including IGIC. This final approval allows for the continuation of the necessary administrative processing for its future tender and execution.
A new section to improve accessibility and safety
The project responds to the need to expand the underpass to improve the Camino de Los Fajardo road, with the aim of ensuring the transversal permeability of the LZ-2, improving pedestrian accessibility, and increasing the safety and comfort of all users.
The action includes the execution of a new structural frame, as well as the abutments at the entrance and exit of one of its sides, preserving the abutments of the other side of the underpass.
The new section of the stretch under the structure will have a two-way roadway, consisting of two lanes of 3.50 meters in width, with shoulders of 0.5 meters on both sides. Likewise, a segregated lateral sidewalk will be provided for pedestrian traffic, with an approximate width of three meters, protected by a curb and railing to ensure separation between different uses.
Execution of works in phases
The expansion of the underpass will be executed through a phased construction process, designed to reconcile the demolition and execution of the new structure with the maintenance of traffic on the LZ-2. The two phases will be developed successively on each of the roadways, which will allow the underpass to be rebuilt without the need for complete road closures.
One of the first actions will be the construction of a micropile screen in the median, during which the traffic on the LZ-2 will be reduced to one lane per direction. Subsequently, traffic will be diverted to one of the carriageways to carry out the demolitions and excavations of the closed carriageway, as well as half of the structure and its corresponding wing. The work will continue with the backfilling and paving, before changing the direction of the traffic diversion on the LZ-2 to undertake the second phase.
The Director General of Road Infrastructure, Rosana Melián, has highlighted that "this action responds to the commitment of the Government of the Canary Islands to continue promoting road infrastructures that improve the mobility and safety of citizens. The expansion of this underpass will resolve a point of special importance for the connectivity of the municipality of Tías and will offer an adequate response to current traffic needs".
Likewise, she has pointed out that "we continue to advance in the modernization of Lanzarote's road network with projects that have been designed with criteria of safety, sustainability, and technical quality, also guaranteeing compliance with all environmental and public procurement regulations".
