The Lanzarote Member of Parliament of the Canarian Nationalist Group (CC-PNC-AHI), Jesús Machín Tavío, has obtained the unanimous support of the Parliament of the Canary Islands for the establishment of an immediate line of aid to help alleviate the economic consequences caused by Covid-19 that the camel sector is suffering.
With the approval of the Non-Law Proposal (PNL) presented by Machín, not only will the expenses of care and maintenance of the specimens be covered, but also a line of aid will be established from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Canarian Executive, for the maintenance of the native breed and to investigate possible uses not practiced in the Autonomous Community, according to CC.
“Losing this breed would be losing part of our history, of our idiosyncrasy. Losing this breed due to lack of involvement of the institutions would be forgetting how fundamental and vital camels were for the progress of Lanzarote”, said the nationalist deputy, who has expressed his satisfaction for the support received from all parliamentary groups.
Machín highlighted how important this aid is for the families in charge of the care and maintenance of the camel, "who have seen how their economic situation has become more complicated with the arrival of Covid-19".
“Their care involves an enormous cost, without activity as we are at the moment, they are going through one of the most delicate times in their history. They have never had any kind of help from the institutions, they have been maintained by themselves without the need for intervention by the administration, while other sectors have received aid and can take advantage of different calls due to the stoppage of activity, but the camel sector has had no option to take advantage of it”, he pointed out.
Thus, Machín wanted to thank the camel herders "for all that their work has meant and means for the life of Lanzarote" and the Yaiza City Council "for the demands made so that this work is recognized and does not fall into oblivion".
