The Socialist Group of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has celebrated the recent approval in plenary of its proposal for the Government of the Canary Islands to award the Gold Medal 2025 to the Sociedad de Cultura, Recreo y Deportes Torrelavega, in recognition of its outstanding career. “It is a well-deserved recognition for the 80 years of uninterrupted service to the civic, cultural and sports development of Arrecife”, said Alberto Aguiar, councilor of the Socialist Group and former head of the Culture area.
During his speech in the plenary, Aguiar highlighted the history of this entity founded in 1944 and that “has been a pillar in the social life of the La Vega neighborhood, promoting values such as coexistence, freedom and culture, in addition to promoting sports, especially soccer and handball”.
Aguiar also stressed that the entity has not only distinguished itself for its support of sports, but also for its commitment during the Franco dictatorship, when it joined the voices that demanded the recovery of democracy. Among its milestones are the organization of talks and conferences with leading figures of thought and politics, as well as the promotion of cultural and social events over the decades.
“We have the obligation to recognize the work of the Torrelavega Society, which has been a meeting place that promotes cohesion and a sense of belonging in Arrecife”, added the Socialist Group, stressing the importance of its role as promoter of an inclusive and integrating environment”, concluded Aguiar.
The proposal will also be debated in the next plenary session of the Arrecife City Council, with the aim of consolidating this institutional tribute to the historic Society.
