The plenary of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has ratified unanimously by all political groups this Monday morning during an extraordinary session its opposition to the installation of a hundred marine cages between Arrecife and the César Manrique Airport. The project arises as a result of the declaration of this marine geographical area as an Aquaculture Interest Zone ZIA-LZ-2.
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort (CC), thus endorsed the filing of the judicial appeal, which had already been initiated by Dolores Corujo (PSOE) during her presidency, against the approval of the aforementioned project.
“All political forces agree that it is the best for our islands and I appreciate the union that we have demonstrated here today in defense of something that affects us all”, said the president, assuring that he assumes “that legitimacy that they have given me to defend the coast of Lanzarote hand in hand with all the administrations and agents involved”. “It is essential to preserve the ecosystem, preserve our image and that these economic activities are positioned in those places where they can really be positioned and that everyone on the Island is aligned so as not to compromise the coastline”, added Betancort.
For his part, the Councilor of the Territorial Policy Area, Jesús Machín Tavío, pointed out that “we are following the same line marked so far because the rejection of institutions, associations such as fishermen's associations, and the population in general, to the installation of aquaculture on the coasts of our island”, recalling that “it was during the previous term when the order was given to file an administrative litigation appeal against said concessions, in a gesture of responsibility and commitment, the Betancort government assumes the request of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) so that the new plenary adopts said agreement”.
“We are against the aquaculture of Playa Quemada, as we defended in our stage in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, in the Agriculture Commission, and in fact, we must not forget that a proposal from the Nationalist Group was introduced in the new climate change law, relating to the fact that in the ordering of the coastline the maintenance of our marine ecosystem must always be prioritized over any type of exploitation of another nature”, Machín concluded.
