The Cabildo of Lanzarote has formalized the signing of the contract for the execution of the restoration works of the Plaza de Las Palmas and the reorganization of its accesses, a project that will recover and beautify one of the most emblematic urban spaces in the center of Arrecife.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and councilor of the Heritage Area, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighted the importance of this action: "With this intervention we recover a degraded but key space in the social and cultural life of Arrecife, returning to the population a renovated, accessible and attractive environment. We continue to bet on the improvement of the island's heritage and the revitalization of the historic center."

For her part, the Councilor for Project Planning and Island Vice President, María Jesús Tovar, highlighted that "this rehabilitation is a sign of the Cabildo's commitment to improving public spaces and cultural heritage. Thanks to our work and European funding, we can undertake works that will transform the image of Arrecife and other spaces, offering citizens what they deserve."

The contract has been awarded to the company Transporte y Excavaciones Tiagua, S.L., for an amount of 751,500.76 euros, to which 52,605.05 euros are added as IGIC. The execution period of the works will be eight months from the signing of the re-staking act, scheduled for the coming weeks.

Public spaces worthy of a capital city

This project is part of the 2023 Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination, financed by the European Union through Next Generation EU funds, with the aim of promoting the cultural and urban heritage of Lanzarote. The intervention contemplates the complete renovation of the pavement, the modernization of street furniture, the improvement of accessibility and the installation of new vegetation and shade elements to guarantee the comfort of citizens and visitors.

In addition, Oswaldo Betancort thanked the Arrecife City Council and the private initiative "for the efforts they are making to continue to give luster to the urban center, a way to promote our heritage within the framework of the commercial and service offer. The execution of this project also wants to recognize the role of many citizens who work to build a better city."

A mandate commitment

The current Government Group of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has always placed this project among its mandate priorities, "because it is unacceptable that the third capital of the Canary Islands has a main square in the historic center in a deplorable state," explained the president. "The Cabildo has acted diligently in this matter, receiving last October the inter-administrative cooperation issued by the Arrecife City Council, the necessary document to tender the rehabilitation project of the Plaza de Las Palmas," they said.

The Councilor for Project Planning clarified that "only work and political will have allowed this space to regain its splendor and functionality as a meeting place for residents and visitors," commented María Jesús Tovar.

The Plaza de Las Palmas, located next to the Church of San Ginés, represents a cultural and social reference point in Arrecife, and its rehabilitation has been a constant demand from residents for years. "The Heritage Area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote works daily on multiple conservation and rehabilitation projects promoted by public or private initiative," they concluded from the Cabildo.
