The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Fisheries Area, has requested the mandatory authorization from the General Directorate of Coasts to proceed with the dredging of the beaching area of the La Santa refuge, so that the boats can operate safely.
“It is a demand from the fishermen of La Santa that we want to solve as soon as possible so that the fishing boats can carry out their tasks safely and avoid the current dangers due to the shallow depth of the area”, according to Oswaldo Betancort.
In the request sent this Tuesday to the General Directorate of Coasts, it is pointed out that the swell, common in this area of the Lanzarote coast, "causes the deposit of rocks and other materials" that generates a decrease in the free height from the sea surface to the seabed, "increasing the risk that boats may collide with it and making it impossible for them to fish in good conditions".
“The dredging of the beaching area will allow the boats to operate normally inside the fishing refuge, prevent the situation from continuing to worsen, and correct the problems that are currently registered as a result of the shallow depth of the area”, explained the Area Councilor, Samuel Martín.
The fishing refuge of La Santa, in the municipality of Tinajo, has a great interest for the fishing sector of Lanzarote since it constitutes the place where numerous fishermen in the area fish, coming to fill the gap that existed between Órzola and Playa Blanca, which results in economic savings for these fishermen, according to the Cabildo's argument.
