The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its Area for the Elderly and Intergenerational Relations, has presented a series of innovative initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life and promoting the active participation of the elderly population of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
Among the new actions, the celebration of the first Gala for the Elderly of Lanzarote and La Graciosa stands out, a pioneering event on the island, which seeks to recognize and make visible the work of people, groups and entities that have distinguished themselves by their work in favor of active aging and the integration of the elderly into social life.
During the presentation, the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, and the councilor responsible for the Area for the Elderly, Nori Machín, highlighted the importance of placing the elderly at the center of social policies. “It is our responsibility to recognize the effort and dedication of those who have contributed so much to our community. The Gala for the Elderly will be a tribute to that dedication and commitment,” Betancort highlighted.
The gala will include the presentation of the Awards in the Field of Elderly People of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, which will recognize people and entities in various categories such as Senior Citizen of the Year, Elderly Group or Association, Best Active Aging Project, Caregiver of the Year, among others.
Likewise, during the event, the new communication project of the Area for the Elderly was presented, with the aim of bringing institutional management closer to the elderly people of the island. This new proposal aimed at the elderly population of Lanzarote and La Graciosa includes the launch of the magazine “Más Vital” aimed at elderly associations, with content on the activities and programs developed, and the promotion of active aging.
In addition, a new Facebook page and an exclusive WhatsApp channel have been enabled for the elderly population, in order to keep them informed of all the initiatives and proposals promoted by the Cabildo.
Balance of an Area that was born in June 2023
Nori Machín, councilor of the Area for the Elderly and Intergenerational Relations, highlighted the progress made since the creation of the new department in June 2023: "From the Cabildo, we have taken very important steps to place our elderly at the center of social policies. For the first time in the history of Lanzarote, we have a council dedicated exclusively to them, a milestone that demonstrates our commitment. In addition, we have launched the First Island Council of Elderly People of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, a space where our elderly are not only heard, but have an active voice in the decisions that directly affect them.”
"We are also very proud of the +Vital Active Rejuvenation Island Plan, which is proving to be a resounding success. With activities such as Playa Fit, Ponte en Marcha and the First Cognitive Olympics, we have managed to promote the physical and mental well-being of our elderly, offering them the possibility of staying active and participatory,” she concluded.
