The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Area of Social Welfare and Inclusion, has launched a self-defense workshop aimed at women and minors who are victims of gender violence. The main objective of this project is to empower the participants through learning self-defense techniques and improving their emotional well-being.
The Area Councilor, Marci Acuña, who attended the first session of the practice, explained that the workshop not only addresses self-defense techniques, but also provides "a safe space where women and minors can share their experiences and build social relationships. Our goal is that they feel safer and more confident in their day-to-day lives, thus fostering their self-esteem," she says.
The workshop began last Saturday, October 19, with about thirty participants and will be held in bi-weekly sessions, for a period of three months. These sessions provide essential skills that allow women to recognize and master dangerous situations, remaining calm in the face of risky circumstances.
In addition, work is being done to improve the reaction to possible physical aggressions or harassment, and knowledge is being imparted on techniques to prevent, impede or repel a possible aggression. The attendees have been selected -taking into account their profile- by the team of social workers of the Equality Service.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote "is committed to continue working to promote equality and safety for all people on the island." And it recalls that this initiative is developed with funds from the State Pact against Gender Violence.
