The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa will incorporate the remaining 53.4 million euros from the treasury into the general budget for the 2026 fiscal year. This injection will occur in the extraordinary plenary session that will take place on July 9.
The Governing Group of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, composed of Coalición Canaria; Partido Popular and the councilor of the Mixed Group, Armando Santana; focus investments on four main axes: housing, transport, water, and the increase of the Municipal Cooperation Plan.
Likewise, these accounts are broken down, in addition to the 31,480,000 euros distributed among the different management areas; up to eight million euros allocated to the free public transport in Lanzarote and, in addition, fourteen million euros to settle the credit inherited by the government of the previous term.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Oswaldo Betancort, stated that this economic increase "responds to the main axes of Government demanded by the islands of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, with a social and real investment that we have carried out in recent years". "We not only increase the amounts in the different management areas, but we also respond to obligations that would not correspond to us but that we undertake to guarantee collective well-being, as is the case with free transport," he added.
The vice-president and head of the Treasury and Contracting area, María Jesús Tovar, for her part, maintained that in this way "actions and initiatives can be executed in important and demanded matters where a greater investment effort is needed". "An important implementation of the initial budgets has been achieved, which will allow us to address the main deficiencies that currently affect us," she pointed out.
Housing and Water, firm objectives of the Governing Group
In line with the accounts of previous fiscal years, as well as subsequent injections of remaining funds, the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa sets as its main objective to resolve the demands of the residents of both islands.
Among these is the improvement of access to housing, a major problem for Lanzarote as a whole. Therefore, the island's first corporation allocates 5,736,657.94 euros, with the aim of increasing the public housing stock on the island.
On the other hand, and also in response to the measures that the Cabildo de Lanzarote has been taking in water matters and after the resolution of the contract of the managing company, thus assuming the integral water cycle by the Water Consortium; the Government group injects 2 million euros for the improvement and renovation of the hydraulic infrastructure of both islands.
“We continue working so that all the people of Lanzarote; of La Graciosa; have an efficient integral water system. We promised that we would do everything in our power to improve the water supply in record time and, through measures such as the injection of remnants, we are working intensely on it,” said the president.
Extraordinary Municipal Cooperation Plan
The vice president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, María Jesús Tovar, explained this Monday to the seven municipalities the system of the extraordinary Municipal Cooperation Plan for this 2026. “More than 6.3 million euros, distributed equitably, that we have included in these remnants to be able to satisfy the demands of the seven municipalities, thus always having a hand in collaborating in everything that the First Corporation can,” Tovar asserted.
In this sense, the treasury surplus also reflects the increase in the amounts allocated to the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium which, after the implementation of a detachment in the north of the island, will now have 1,829,000 euros more. This increase will be allocated to contributions such as subsidies to the island's civil protections; health coverage in the Famara area or the surveillance service on the coasts of Lanzarote.
Social and environmentally friendly policies
This increase in the 2026 accounts also reflects the commitment to social policies. For this reason, up to 1,665,000 euros are added in the areas of Social Welfare and Inclusion and Seniors, to cover actions in terms of accessibility and inclusion; island training focused on the person or the adapted disability festival.
On the other hand, the active aging strategy continues with the injection for the area of Seniors and Intergenerational Relations, betting on consolidated projects such as +Vital.
In that same vein, up to 135,000 euros are injected into areas such as Biosphere Reserve and Geopark; as well as more than 200,000 in Landscape and Food Sovereignty and 850,000 euros in the Waste area to cover, among other projects, the execution project for the evacuation route and the intervention of external emergency services in the Zonzamas Environmental Complex.
Likewise, the Animal Welfare area, led by counselor Armando Santana, will have an additional 112,000 euros that will allow for the execution of initiatives such as a new edition of the Insular Animal Welfare Fair; the Canary Breed Fair or the feeding of authorized feline colonies.
Commitment to Employment, Education and Tourism
The Inclusive Training and Employment area continues to be a key piece for the Governing Group of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, for which the allocations have been increased with an injection of 784,169 euros, to cover projects such as the first work experience on the island or the call for employment promotion subsidies.
In addition, 440,920 euros are also allocated to the Education area. Likewise, a total of 4.5 million euros have been allocated to the Lanzarote External Promotion Society (SPEL) - Lanzarote Tourism, to continue on the path of attracting qualitative tourism in line with the island's uniqueness.
In this way, the commitment to areas that promote the vitality, knowledge and training of the citizens of Lanzarote and La Graciosa continues.
Care for the primary sector and our traditions
The Crafts area continues to grow constantly to, among other measures, promote the work of the artisan, which has been so important for Lanzarote and La Graciosa. For this reason, 400,000 euros have been injected for the Insular Crafts Fair, this being one of the most important events that best preserve our Canarian idiosyncrasy.
Likewise, just as crafts are, we also continue to bet on the Primary Sector and for our farmers. For this reason, the remainder contemplates the injection of 2.5 million for the Agriculture and Livestock area, for agricultural and livestock projects as well as expenses in the operations of both sectors. In addition, an amount of 200,000 euros has also been allocated for the subsidy of operating expenses to entities and associations in the fishing sector.
