The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, has conveyed his condolences for the death of the former mayor of Arrecife, José María Espino González. On his behalf and on behalf of the entire corporation, he stated: “Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, because a great person has left us, a teaching professional and an example of a politician who understood the public issue as a commitment to the citizens.”
José María Espino, (Guatiza 1935-San Bartolomé 2023), passed away this Thursday at the age of 88, after having dedicated a large part of his life to carrying out political activity and teaching. A teacher by profession and a graduate in Philosophy and Arts from the University of La Laguna, he was director of the UNED between 1976 and 2008.
He had a long and fruitful political career; He was a constituent deputy of the Canary Islands Council, mayor of Arrecife under the PSOE banner, between 1983 and 1995, and Minister of Social Welfare of the Cabildo at the end of the 1990s, serving in this last position in the ranks of the Canarian Coalition.
Among his great contributions to the politics of the capital of Lanzarote is his commitment to urban development, with the approval of the General Plan of Arrecife, and with the implementation of the Medular Road of the capital of Lanzarote.
