The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, held a meeting this Wednesday with representatives of a dozen murgas from the island. The main objective of this meeting was to "convey the institution's commitment to financially helping the Carnival groups and listen to their needs and demands," they transmit from the Cabildo.

The president met with representatives of the murgas 'Inadaptadas', 'Tabletuos', 'Vacilonas', 'Titiroys', 'Desahuciados', 'Faltonas', 'Infiltradas', 'Simplones', 'Intoxicados', 'Enraladas' and the children's murgas 'Chau, Chau' and 'Noveleros'.

Dolores Corujo explained that the Centers of Art, Culture and Tourism (CACT Lanzarote), coordinated by the CEO Benjamín Perdomo, "are committed to paying subsidies as sponsorship to each murga", while the Department of Culture, coordinated by Alberto Aguiar, will pay aid for each performance to each group, "in order for their participation in what is traditionally known as the oldest carnival in the Archipelago, the Arrecife Carnival, to be a success."

"Lanzarote's Carnival is the oldest in the Canary Islands and therefore we cannot fail to value its role in the island's culture. We also do not forget that they were prohibited parties during the dictatorship and that the illusion of the people of Lanzarote was able to overcome this, finding a way to continue celebrating the carnivals under the clandestine name of Winter Festivals. Therefore, it is not a party for use, it is a party with history that we must support and for this reason we are working on the realization of a documentary on the subject," Corujo highlighted.

"Just as we cannot turn a blind eye to the neglect, abandonment and unfulfilled promises to which our murgas have been subjected in recent years. We have promised that we are going to help the Carnival groups as much as possible and we are going to fulfill it. I also want to convey to them that we are at the disposal of each and every one of the groups so that they can develop their art in the freest and most optimal way possible," concluded the president.

The president announced that she will also hold "meetings with the comparsas and batucadas."
