The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Area of the Elderly and Intergenerational Relations, presented this Friday, September 20, the project Breaking the Digital Divide of the Elderly. The action seeks to study the technological barrier that affects this sector of the population, contributing to its integration into the computer environment. The company in charge of carrying out the diagnosis is Carsa, a strategic innovation consultancy. It has a budget of 15,000 euros.

The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, indicated that the commitment of this team has been "essential to carry out key initiatives that improve the quality of life of the elderly and strengthen ties between generations." He stressed that this project reflects the sensitivity and strategic vision of the department.

"This diagnosis will provide clear and practical solutions to ensure that seniors can enjoy the benefits of technology," he said. "Thanks to this effort, a deep understanding of the needs of this population sector has been achieved," the president concluded.

The councilor of the Area, Nori Machín, explained that on the Island there are more than 18,000 seniors, of which more than 40% have never used the internet approximately. "The Internet is an important tool in our lives, and we want this group to have full digital inclusion and access to the opportunities it offers," she said.

"Public administrations have a duty to make available to the community the tools and strategies that help eliminate barriers and create specific services that are simpler and adapted to the needs of the elderly population," said the councilor.

The presentation ceremony was attended by the regional director of Carsa, Antonio Collado; the head of expansion of Carsa, Igor Suarez, and the president of the Association of Seniors and Volunteers of Tías, Severiano García.

The diagnosis that will be carried out will establish the ambition to reduce the digital divide, and define a roadmap that enables a change in the model in this area. It will be a qualitative study, in which online forms, individual interviews, and working tables will be carried out, among others.
