The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, and the Deputy for Equality of the Common Deputy, Beatriz Barrera, held a meeting at the public institution in which they addressed, among other issues, the creation of the Island Council for Equality.

"The communities of the 21st century need to have all possible instruments to support the change of model promoted by socialization agents with the aim of achieving real and effective equality between individuals," said the president of the first island institution after the meeting.

María Dolores Corujo believes that "the transition towards a new society, with new roles and new behaviors, requires the union and an even more solid commitment from public administrations and social and economic agents." "Unfortunately, we see daily how old stereotypes of behavior that violate the rights of human beings because of their sex, gender or condition are maintained. In this framework, the Island Council for Equality aspires to be an inclusive and participatory body, with the capacity to promote actions that favor egalitarian behaviors among individuals, especially at an early age, and to issue diagnoses and propose intervention policies when discriminatory behaviors are detected," Corujo explained.

The president of the Cabildo and the Deputy for Equality of the Common Deputy also analyzed the current reality of the island and agreed to "continue developing joint lines of action aimed at eradicating the gender perspective and promoting equal opportunities among people."
