The Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved the granting of a subsidy of 100,000 euros to the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's and other Dementias Patients of Lanzarote (AFA), intended for the development of the project Safe permanence at home, aimed at improving the autonomy of dependent people in their usual environment.
The action is integrated into a budget amendment of the island's budget for a total amount of 144,000 euros, approved unanimously in the Plenary Session of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, with the aim of financing different initiatives linked to social welfare and the care of vulnerable groups.
The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, pointed out that this type of measures allow direct action on concrete realities of the island, supporting entities that are already working on the ground with measurable results and with real impact on people.
For his part, the counselor of Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, explained that “these subsidies respond to needs detected in areas such as inclusion, socio-health care or access to adapted sports, with projects that already have a track record and reach specific groups”.
The funded program includes the acquisition of therapeutic material and specific resources intended for people with Alzheimer's and other dementias, in order to promote their personal autonomy and reduce the impact of dependency on the family environment.
It is an intervention focused on the home environment, which allows people to prolong their stay in their usual environment under adequate conditions, avoiding situations of accelerated deterioration and improving the well-being of both users and their caregivers.
Grants for social, cultural and sports projects
The approved file includes four differentiated lines of action, which range from the sports field to social and health intervention, with initiatives that combine inclusion, specialized care, and community development in different parts of the island.
In the sports and social field, the Conejeros Basketball Sports Club receives 15,000 euros for the project Solidarity Sneakers: Lanzarote and Equatorial Guinea, an initiative focused on the sports and social exchange of young people that incorporates values such as cooperation and solidarity through basketball.
For its part, the La Villa Basketball Sports Club will have 22,000 euros to develop the program Inclusive Basketball for Enclave Classrooms, aimed at students with special educational needs, facilitating their participation in adapted sports activities and their integration into regional competitions.
In the health field, the General Foundation of the University of La Laguna receives 7,000 euros for a childhood cancer intervention project with a multidisciplinary approach, focused on the neuropsychological evaluation, intervention, and research of minors who have received oncological treatments within the Canary Islands healthcare network.
These actions respond to a planning that prioritizes direct intervention in groups with specific needs, relying on entities established on the island and with the capacity to develop consolidated projects.
