The Cabildo begins the arrangements for the access to the camping area in Papagayo

The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, in collaboration with the Yaiza City Council, has begun the work to condition the road of access to the Camping Area and the Papagayo beaches, a route used daily by thousands of vehicles to access one of the island's main natural and tourist spaces in the Los Ajaches Natural Monument. 

The Minister of Environment and head of the Camping Area, Samuel Martín, has visited the area on the occasion of the start of the actions and has stressed the importance of intervening on this road to improve its circulation conditions, especially given the high influx of visitors that the Papagayo environment registers during this summer season.

“We are at the entrance of the Los Ajaches Natural Monument with the Yaiza City Council, acting in collaboration to improve access to the Papagayo Beaches and the camping area, places that are highly visited throughout the year, but especially in summer. This section required adequate joint maintenance to guarantee access and safer circulation conditions, in addition to contributing to environmental protection,” said Martín.

For his part, the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, stated that “from Yaiza we have always defended inter-administrative collaboration, especially on actions in protected areas, such as the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, where both institutions have shared responsibilities and obligations in terms of conservation. The maintenance of the road derives from efforts between both administrations to keep it up to date. It is important to water, compact, and create a good surface for the large number of cars that arrive here, so that they can enter with complete safety and without any problems.”

The established works contemplate the conditioning of an estimated surface area of 2,500 square meters to correct the loss of surface, potholes, and existing deformations on the road. Subsequently, the surface will be leveled and compacted, with the aim of leaving the road in optimal conditions for vehicle traffic.

Likewise, the conditioning will be carried out taking into special consideration the location of the road within the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, so the materials used must be compatible from both a geological and landscape point of view with the environment.

The Minister of Environment stressed that “the improvement of access and the maintenance of our natural spaces must always be done with respect and protection for their environmental values”. “Papagayo is one of the most visited enclaves in Lanzarote and we must be able to reconcile public use with the conservation of this privileged environment,” concluded Samuel Martín.
