The Lanzarote Island Council plenary session approved this Friday unanimously by all political groups, including the island government, VOX, PSOE, and Óscar Noda, the motion presented by Santana to promote the transformation of the island into an Island Climate Laboratory.
During the radio program Buenos días, Lanzarote on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero this Friday, the councilor explained that this initiative arose from the Global South Forum and the conference that the humanist Gerd Leonhard gave at it. "I remember that he emphasized the possibilities that Lanzarote could have to become a great climate laboratory," he pointed out.
The initiative proposes to turn Lanzarote into a space for innovation, research, and action against climate change, taking advantage of its condition as a vulnerable territory but with enormous potential to lead sustainable solutions.
Santana emphasized that "the island has unique strengths: a recognized track record in landscape conservation thanks to the legacy of César Manrique, a citizenry committed to the environment, and great potential in renewable energies, water management and sustainable mobility."
The approved agreement contemplates the creation of an Island Strategic Plan for Climate Innovation, with projects in renewable energies, agroecology, water management, clean mobility, regenerative tourism, and training in green employment.
An Island Climate Coordination Table will also be established to attract European funds and collaborate with international organizations such as UNEP, IRENA and WMO.
"Lanzarote has the opportunity to be an international benchmark in sustainability. The fact that all parties have agreed on this vision demonstrates that the climate emergency requires unity, commitment, and vision," Santana highlighted after the vote.
