The Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands address the improvement of waste management in Lanzarote

Among the measures transferred by the island councilor of Waste is the improvement of treatment at the landfill, an action valued at more than 10.5 million euros

The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Waste Area directed by Domingo Cejas, has received this Monday the institutional visit of the general director of Ecological Transition and Fight Against Climate Change of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Montañés, in a day focused on promoting waste management policies in Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

The visit began with a technical meeting at the Cabildo, where strategic projects underway and in the planning phase were discussed, including the future composting plant, the new clean point in the municipality of Tinajo, the framework agreements with entities such as ECOEMBES and ECOVIDRIO, as well as the development of the new Master Plan for Waste in Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

The island councilor of Waste, Domingo Cejas, stressed the importance of this inter-administrative coordination to continue advancing. “We have reviewed the agreements in force, and we also hope that this year we can have the new Waste Master Plan approved. In addition, we have transferred an essential project for the Zonzamas Environmental Complex, an action valued at more than 10.5 million euros destined to improve waste treatment in the same”, he explained. 

Cejas thanked the general director for his direct involvement and interest in knowing the real state of the facilities. “We are working to ensure that Lanzarote has a more efficient, modern and environmentally friendly waste treatment system. Coordination with the Government of the Canary Islands is essential for resources to arrive effectively and for the strategic projects that this island needs to be executed”, concluded the councilor.

 

Technical visit to the Zonzamas Environmental Complex

After the meeting, they moved to the Zonzamas Environmental Complex, where they were received by the technical team of the management company. During the visit, accompanied also by the Head of the Waste Service of the Government of the Canary Islands, María Teresa Rodríguez, the Head of the Eastern Waste Section, Marta López, and the coordinator of the Waste Area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, they toured the facilities and reviewed the current waste treatment processes, as well as the main needs for action in accordance with current regulations.

The general director of Ecological Transition and Fight Against Climate Change of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Montañés, valued the commitment of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and stressed the need to continue working together. “This visit allows us to know the reality on the ground and facilitate solutions tailored to the real needs of the island”, he pointed out.

“Lanzarote is committed to improving waste management, as is the Government of the Canary Islands. This is one of the great challenges we have ahead and, at the same time, an opportunity to do it well in the coming years. It is necessary to work hand in hand with the island councils and local entities to fulfill the commitment to improve the services of the Canarians”, concluded the general director.
