The Cabildo of Lanzarote has announced this Monday an agreement of collaboration with the pigeon racing clubs of the island, in which SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, the Centers of Art, Culture and Tourism, and Naviera Armas participate, with the objective of supporting the development of this activity and responding to the "historic demands" of the sector.
The initiative is part of the commitment made after the recent meeting with pigeon racing clubs, in which the need to reinforce institutional support was conveyed to guarantee the continuity and projection of this practice in Lanzarote, supporting the multiple trips that athletes undertake during the season.
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, remarked during the presentation that “this agreement responds to the commitment of this Corporation with the island's collectives and with those activities that are part of our identity. Colombophilia has a deep root in Lanzarote and deserves the necessary support to continue growing and projecting itself,” noted the president before cataloging this agreement as “historic” which mitigates the rise in costs for these athletes.
For his part, the Minister of the Centers of Art, Culture and Tourism, Ángel Vázquez, has pointed out that “supporting initiatives linked to our traditions is also a way of preserving the island's cultural heritage, while generating new opportunities for its dissemination and revitalization”.
Also present at the agreement's presentation was Héctor Rojas, head of Navieras Armas, who emphasized the company's support for traditional Canary Islands sports.
The agreement contemplates facilitating the assistance of clubs to championships, as well as promoting the organization of specialized events such as the Columbophile Days of Lanzarote, reinforcing their visibility and growth capacity.
In this regard, the CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, Héctor Fernández, stressed that “this initiative contributes to diversifying the destination’s proposal, highlighting activities rooted in the territory and connected with local identity. Furthermore, it allows for the creation of new spaces of interest that expand the offer and reinforce Lanzarote’s positioning”.
Representatives of the five clubs that currently practice this sport attended this Monday's meeting, entities that concentrate dozens of athletes and involve thousands of participating pigeons. All agreed on the "historic nature of this agreement," by which the Cabildo supports the freightage during the season to ensure the clubs' presence at regional and external events.
