The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved this Monday the specific agreement of cooperation with the Canarian Institute of Housing (ICAVI) to channel an island contribution of 1.4 million euros to the Youth Rental Bonus, a line of aid aimed at facilitating access to decent housing for young people between 18 and 35 years old on the island.

This initiative, developed within the framework of the Canary Islands Housing Plan 2020-2025, will allow complementing the autonomous call for aid managed by ICAVI, ensuring that more young residents in Lanzarote can benefit from a subsidy of up to 250 euros per month and for a maximum period of two years, provided that the income of the cohabitation unit does not exceed three times the IPREM.

“This agreement reflects the Cabildo's commitment to the youth of Lanzarote. Housing cannot continue to be a barrier to emancipation, and even less so in a territory with the singularities and difficulties imposed by insularity,” explained the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, who especially valued the formula of inter-administrative cooperation that allows simplifying procedures and avoiding duplication.

For his part, the Minister of Housing, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, explained that this line of action responds to a strategic priority of the Cabildo that focuses on guaranteeing real opportunities for emancipation and rooting for the youth of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. He added that “investment in youth housing is an investment in the future, in social stability and in territorial cohesion.”

“With this agreement, we respond to an urgent need and move towards a structural policy of support for youth from the territory, with solutions adapted to our island reality,” concluded Jiménez.

The island's economic contribution will be managed in a coordinated manner with ICAVI through a specific sub-line within the autonomous call, aimed exclusively at young residents in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, which guarantees greater administrative efficiency, traceability of funds and more direct attention to the real demand of the territory.

During the session of the Governing Council, the main barriers affecting the youth emancipation process were also addressed, with special emphasis on access to housing, a problem recently identified by the Youth Council of Lanzarote as one of the main obstacles to the autonomy of young people.
