The Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved an investment of 1.5 million euros to create shade areas in public schools in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, thus responding to one of the most prominent demands of the educational community.
This initiative is part of a nominated subsidy from the Education Area of the Cabildo to the General Directorate of Infrastructure and Equipment of the Government of the Canary Islands to improve school infrastructures included in the Adaptation Plan of Educational Centers to high temperatures, which responds to the close line of collaboration between both administrations.
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighted the importance of this action: "A quality education begins by offering suitable environments for students, and the creation of shade areas responds to an evident need in our islands of Lanzarote and La Graciosa and is a sign of our commitment to the well-being and safety of students."
For her part, the Minister of Education, Ascensión Toledo, clarifies that "the Strategic Plan of Subsidies 2024 allows an important step in the commitment of the Cabildo creating spaces that improve the conditions of learning and coexistence in the centers", and points out that "the design of these shade spaces prioritizes safety, comfort and efficient use of all outdoor spaces."
Likewise, the councilor thanks her technical team "for the implication to respond to a historical demand, as well as the rest of the departments involved, and recalls that from the Area will continue to manage and materialize projects that result in the comprehensive care to students."
Infrastructures that benefit the entire educational community
The initiative covers educational centers in all municipalities of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, including schools of early childhood and primary education (CEIP), schools of compulsory education (CEO) and secondary education institutes (IES). The distribution of funds includes actions that range from 20,000 to 40,000 euros per center, depending on the needs of each one.
With this action, which will be executed between December 2024 and June 2026, the Island Council reinforces its commitment to education, understood as a priority in the development of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. This project also aligns with sustainability objectives by promoting more habitable outdoor spaces and reducing the impact of heat on school activities.
