The athletics track at the Lanzarote Sports City, recently renovated, is now available to clubs and the general public after the full completion of the work and the fulfillment of the homologation process by the Spanish Athletics Federation.
The Vice President of the Cabildo and head of the Area of Planning and Project Coordination, María Jesús Tovar, highlighted the importance of this intervention, which is part of the modernization plan for island sports infrastructures. "With the launch of this track, we continue to advance in the modernization of leading sports facilities in the Canary Islands. The Lanzarote Sports City is a fundamental space for our athletes, clubs, and citizens, and with this action, we guarantee that they have a top-quality surface for their preparation and competition," Tovar said.
For his part, the Councilor for Physical Activity and Sports, Juan Monzón, highly valued the final result of the works. "We are fulfilling our commitment to offer Lanzarote athletes safe, modern infrastructures adapted to their needs." "This athletics track was a historical demand of the sector and today it is a reality that will benefit both federated clubs and athletes, as well as those who practice athletics recreationally," said the councilor, who also apologized to the users of the track for the delay, and assured that it has already been put into operation "immediately after receiving the approval of the total reception of the work and the homologation by the Federation."
The new track, with approved synthetic material, features improvements in its drainage system, signage, and launch and jump areas, which will allow it to host training sessions and competitions in optimal conditions.
The Insular Sports Service continues to work on improving and adapting sports facilities throughout the island, with the aim of promoting sports and further consolidating Lanzarote as a benchmark in the field of sports and physical activity.
The work, which includes the athletics track and the turf, was financed with funds from the Cabildo [local government] and the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN), representing an investment of nearly 1.16 million euros, and also included the complete renovation of the turf on the football field.
