The mayoress of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez, and the first lieutenant of Mayor, David Toledo, have raised this Tuesday morning, in front of the headquarters of the capital's City Council, the flag of Ukraine, in an institutional act to condemn the Russian invasion and show the solidarity of the municipal corporation with the Ukrainian people.
In the act, which was attended by members of the capital corporation and municipal workers, the mayoress Astrid Pérez read the institutional declaration of condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, approved unanimously, by all the political formations with municipal representation in the ordinary plenary session held on March 7.
The Arrecife City Council requests in the final resolution part of the declaration “that the government negotiate as soon as possible in Brussels a humanitarian aid plan for the Ukrainian civilian population, as well as a contingency plan for the massive reception of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war.”
And as a second point, the Arrecife City Council is “at the disposal of the Government of Spain, to collaborate, to the extent of our powers and resources, in welcoming the citizens of Ukraine who are leaving their country.”
“Today, Tuesday, March 15, 2022, marks 20 days since the start of the war in Ukraine. We are witnessing with horror and with our hearts in our hands the information and images that come to us from Ukraine,” Astrid Pérez highlighted at the beginning of her speech.
“Any war or warlike outbreak is unreasonable, we should not allow the language of weapons to prevail over negotiation and agreement. Yesterday reminds us of the historical errors that have been committed during the past century, events that were so absolutely devastating as to have learned the lesson well,” the mayoress added.
Astrid Pérez also highlighted in her presentation the character of an invading country governed by Vladimir Putin. “A megalomaniac with imperialist airs, an authoritarian hierarch who keeps his own people under the yoke of censorship and oppression”, she adds.
From the Consistory they point out that the proposal for an institutional agreement is established around five points: “the denunciation and condemnation of the invasion; respect for the right to preserve territorial integrity; the commitment of the City Council to defend democratic principles and fundamental rights; support for the actions of the Government of Spain, NATO and the EU; and, finally, solidarity with the Ukrainian people and with the more than one hundred thousand residents in our country.”
