The Argana Sports Pavilion will have to be closed "for a couple of months" to undertake important works and solve the "structural failures" of the building. This way, it will be possible to obtain the opening license, which was not processed in its day, despite the fact that the facility has been open for more than four years.
The former mayor María Isabel Déniz held an inauguration ceremony for this pavilion shortly before the 2007 elections, but it was not until more than a year later that it was launched. In all this time, it has lacked an opening license.
The current Sports Councilor of the Arrecife City Council, Francisca Toledo, has explained that the roof has "dampness", which must be fixed. "The gutters would not be well placed, but you can no longer ask the construction company for responsibilities because the guarantee expired. In addition, work must be done on the floor, which rose after the heavy rains in Argana, because the water entered," the councilor said on Radio Lanzarote.
The works to solve these problems and to be able to obtain the license are likely to be undertaken in the summer months. "From May to September the competition stops. It would be ideal to undertake the works at this time and not harm the users," defended Toledo, who also pointed out that the City Council "is looking for a location for the basketball and gymnastics clubs" that train in this place.
Toledo also recalled that the pavilion's parking lot also lacks a license. "It cannot be used because that is more dangerous, because vehicles enter there," she indicated. It should be remembered that the awarding of this work on the Argana sports pavilion to FCC was carried out during the time of María Isabel Déniz as mayor of Arrecife and is one of the contracts that are being investigated within the "Unión" case, for the alleged payment of bribes.
In December 2012, the [Christmas Gymnastics Festival could not be held in this pavilion and had to be moved to Tías->74462]. At that time, the councilor assured that it had nothing to do with the license, but that the building was not "in a condition" to host "a large event", after the recent rains.
A minor work in the pool to obtain the license
Another municipal infrastructure that also lacks a permit is the pool. Toledo recalled that it was also inaugurated in 2007 and began operating in 2008 without an opening license. In December 2012, a monitoring commission was held for Lude, the company that manages this pool, and they were asked to apply for the license. At the same time, they had to make a project on "how the building and the activity are today".
To obtain the license, in addition, a minor work had to be undertaken. "As of today, it is being carried out to adapt to current legislation, which requires it, for example, to have two external evacuation stairs. It also did not comply with the access ramp to the soccer field, which will be another one. There were a series of things that they have been ordered to do from the Technical Office," Toledo explained.
In this way, the councilor is confident that "they will not take long" to obtain the license. "I don't think so, because only that adaptation with that small work was missing," she pointed out. For this reason, she wanted to convey a message of "tranquility" to all users. "It is not going to be closed because it would be a very great harm to all users," she insisted.
