The Lanzarote Island Council has put out to tender the works for the new drinking water distribution network on the Camino del Barranco, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, an action co-financed by the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN) that will provide drinking water supply to an area that currently lacks this basic infrastructure and where supply is carried out by tanker trucks.

The president of the Lanzarote Island Council, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighted that “this new tender reflects the commitment of the governing group to continue improving the island’s hydraulic infrastructure and to bring solutions to those areas that have lacked a basic service such as drinking water for too long. Every project we launch represents a further step towards a modern, efficient network prepared to respond to the present and future needs of Lanzarote”.

For her part, the vice-president and head of the Planning and Project Coordination area, María Jesús Tovar, underlined the importance of the financing from the Canary Islands Development Fund. “The FDCAN continues to be a fundamental tool for promoting strategic projects that improve the quality of life of the residents,” she pointed out.

The works will be carried out on the Camino del Barranco, south of the urban center of San Bartolomé, a predominantly agricultural area towards Montaña Blanca, with access from the insular road LZ-302, and are part of the strategic line “Investments in Infrastructure” of the FDCAN.

The action was subject to a first tender during 2025, which was declared void as no company submitted a bid.

After this, the Island Council updated and improved the technical project, prioritizing the non-repayment of financing and ensuring that the network reached the supply to both the homes and the farms in the area.
