Telecinco will commemorate with a two-chapter miniseries the tragedy suffered by the McDonnell Douglas-82 aircraft of the Spanair company, which crashed on August 20, 2008, seconds after taking off from Barajas airport bound for Las Palmas, according to the newspaper El País. Emma Suárez and Carmelo Gómez will be two of the protagonists of the production.
The miniseries will review the accident in which 154 people died out of the 172 traveling on the aircraft, 22 of them children. This event is considered the largest air tragedy recorded in Spain since the Mejorada del Campo accident in 1983 (Madrid), which resulted in 181 deaths.
In the new project, the private channel moves away from telefilms inspired by famous people to focus on a catastrophe that "still remains in memory." Telecinco is aware of the "delicate argument", so sources from the channel assure that the fatal accident will be treated with "utmost care", so as not to hurt sensitivities.
The Barajas accident coincided with the premiere of the sixteenth season of Hospital Central, whose first chapter, which was to premiere on September 3, also addressed an air crash. According to El País, Telecinco then considered not offering it "out of respect for the families" of the victims.
