José Clavijo y Fajardo (Teguise 1726 – Madrid 1806) is a prominent member of the Enlightenment in Spain. He spent his childhood and adolescence in Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. In 1749 he already settled in Madrid. He traveled through the country and France. Some personal incidents were immortalized by authors such as Goethe. He was Director of the Theaters of the Royal Sites, of the Historical and Political Mercury, or of the Royal Cabinet of Natural History.
He translated The Natural, General and Particular History written in French by the Count of Buffon. Among his publications, The Thinker stands out, which he began to print in 1762 and which contributed to the moralization of the society of his time.
These conferences are presented as an opportunity to reinforce the knowledge and dissemination of his life and work. With them we will be able to approach both his historical and cultural context and his own biography. Several specialists related to the universities and educational and institutional centers of the islands will be featured.
To begin, on March 18 at 7:00 p.m. in Plaza Clavijo y Fajardo (Teguise), a dissemination exhibition designed by the historian Félix Delgado López will be inaugurated.
