The Teguise City Council has assured this Wednesday in a press release that the need to adapt to current regulations and the lack of municipal powers to fully assume the service have conditioned the expansion of educational offerings at this time for the Municipal Children's School Lola.
In this regard, they have pointed out that it "will guarantee the continuity of the Municipal Children's School during the next school year, keeping the classroom for children aged 2 to 3 years operational, under the same conditions as the current year and with capacity for 18 students through municipal staff". However, the families of the students aged 0 to 2 years will not be able to enroll their children due to the lack of places.
Nearly two dozen families have denounced "the lack of transparency", the "excuses" and the "contradictions" of the Teguise City Council regarding the future of the Lola Municipal Children's School and the zero-to-two-year-old children's classroom. At the same time, they have warned that the lack of places in this space "directly affects" their work-life balance.
In a collective request, filed on April 13, seventeen families with children up to two years old have stated that their children need these public places. However, they have been left out of this service due to lack of staff. To date, the Teguise City Council has not responded to their demand, despite it having been stated as "urgent".
The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, has pointed out that the City Council "has worked constantly to maintain an essential service for many families in the municipality", especially in terms of work-life balance.
From the City Council they indicate that "the municipal will has always been to keep open the classrooms currently authorized by the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands".
In this regard, the Teguise City Council has been holding continuous meetings and communications since the beginning of the legislature with the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands with the aim of finding a stable solution that allows guaranteeing the continuity and reinforcement of the service.
Likewise, the City Council recalls that during this school year, a few months ago, both the CEIP Doctor Alfonso Spínola and the Consistory itself jointly requested the Department of Education to implement classrooms for 0 to 3 year olds in La Villa de Teguise, taking advantage of the proximity and existing facilities of the Municipal Children's School.
Olivia Duque underlines that “from the City Council we continue working with responsibility and institutional coordination to try to respond to the needs of families within the current jurisdictional and administrative framework”.
The mayor also highlights that “the municipal objective has always been to maintain and reinforce this educational resource, which is why we will continue collaborating with the Department of Education to advance in solutions that allow expanding educational coverage in the municipality”.
The Teguise City Council also continues studying different technical and administrative alternatives that allow it to continue strengthening this service within the current legal framework.
