The Teguise City Council demands from the Government of Spain the unblocking of the file for the construction of niches in the San Simeón cemetery in La Graciosa, an action considered a priority and which responds to a historical demand from the residents of the eighth island.
The Consistory recalls that "it has been promoting this project for months and has already completed all the procedures and requirements corresponding to it as a municipal administration". However, the start of the works remains pending the mandatory authorization from the Coastal Demarcation, an agency dependent on the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
The mayor, Olivia Duque, states that "this project cannot continue to wait as we are talking about an essential service and a real need for the families of La Graciosa".
Duque explains that the City Council "has promoted the initiative from the first moment", obtaining the necessary sectoral reports and environmental authorizations. However, the change of responsibilities over the affected land makes it essential to have the authorization of the Coastal Demarcation to complete the administrative processing and execute the work.
"When a responsibility is not municipal, our duty is not to look the other way, but to lead, mediate, insist, and defend the interests of our neighbors before the competent administration, which is exactly what we are doing," she adds.
Duque emphasizes that "La Graciosa deserves the same administrative agility as any other territory". "We cannot allow such a necessary action to remain blocked by a pending procedure when the City Council has already fulfilled all its obligations; the people of La Graciosa deserve answers and solutions," she insists.
The Teguise City Council assures that "they maintain constant monitoring of the file and continue to carry out all the necessary steps to expedite the authorization that will allow the construction of the new cemetery niches to begin as soon as possible, in addition to showing their willingness to collaborate with all the administrations involved and support any initiative that contributes to unblocking the file".
