The Sumar candidates for the province of Las Palmas to the Congress and the Senate for the next elections on July 23 have opted this Monday, in Lanzarote, for a culture free of cancellations and censorship, such as those imposed by Vox in some institutions where they are governing, in which, for example, it has been forbidden to represent 'Orlando', by Virginia Woolf, because its main character makes a gender transition.

For Noemí Santana, head of the list to the Congress, "there is an urgent need to protect our heritage, both natural and cultural, which has been at real risk, with the arrival of the governments of Vox, hand in hand with the PP. It is clear that, when they take power, the far right sets the tone, which strives to veto creativity." In this sense, the candidate pointed out the importance and contribution to artistic freedom of such fundamental exponents for Lanzarote and the world as César Manrique and José Saramago.

Nona Perera, Sumar's candidate for the Senate for Lanzarote, believes that "if you think about it a little, you can see that it is very difficult to separate culture from heritage, especially when culture suffers an attack, as has recently happened, because that means that the heritage of a people is diminished," she said. "Throughout humanity there have been several attempts to censor creativity and mark political lines with something that has to be the expression of the freedom of a people," she added. "Lanzarote has some basic lines on heritage and culture that belong to the citizens. We have to promote and take care of this treasure, she concluded.

The candidates, together with the also candidate to the Congress, Getsemaní de San Marcos, informed the citizens of the proposals of Sumar, in a walk through Playa Honda, and then participate in the event organized by A Casa de Saramago, in Tías, where, together with feminist and LGTBIQ+ organizations, and activists such as María González, will read fragments of the censored work 'Orlando', to claim cultural freedom and give their unconditional support to the collective, which sees its conquered rights endangered by the reactionary wave that spread through municipalities and communities in the past regional elections.
