Students from IES Zonzamas held a sit-in this Thursday to protest the power outage and to demand a new electrical installation that does not cause these problems. According to Elisa Guadalupe, a first-year high school student and student representative on the School Board, who informed LA VOZ, the protest was carried out from 11.15 to 11.30 am and the students carried candles as a sign of protest.

"Our intention is not to miss class, but to demand that we are teaching in a situation that is not adequate," said Guadalupe, who recalled that the power outage occurred last Tuesday. This was ordered by the Ministry of Industry of the Government of the Canary Islands, which had already made several warnings about the situation of the electrical installation in several schools in Arrecife, which are not adapted to the regulations.

Thus, since Tuesday the students of IES Zonzamas are giving classes without electricity. "High school and ESO students are able to give classes more or less normally, but those who do cycles work with computers and cannot give the subjects," lamented this student.

In this school they are having problems even with the teachers' siren, which warns students when class ends and begins. This horn is also powered by electricity, which, having been cut off, the teachers are solving this problem with a whistle. "They do what they can," Guadalupe said.

They demand a new installation

According to this student, the teachers have informed them that they are trying to solve this situation "as soon as possible", but what Guadalupe wants "is a new safe electrical installation that does not give problems". "A solution for the future," she stressed.

"We are paying for something we have not caused," lamented this student, who recalled that even the food in the dining room and cafeteria of the school "is going to waste".

Therefore, all students will protest this Thursday so that "the electricity supply in this school is solved once and for all".
