The Governing Council has authorized the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families to sign the first addendum for extension and modification of the Agreement signed with the Island Council of Lanzarote, as well as the third addendum for modification and extension of the Agreement with the Island Council of Fuerteventura.
A thousand applications resolved in one year
Through these agreements, the General Directorate of Disability entrusts the island councils with the management that allows for the preparation of psychological and social reports which serve as the basis for determining the degree of disability. In the last year alone, around a thousand applications for disability assessments for residents of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and La Graciosa have been processed.
The agreement with the Cabildo of Fuerteventura was first signed in December 2022 and has been renewed in subsequent years, allowing for the resolution of approximately 1,600 applications from residents of the island. Specifically, throughout 2025, 430 cases have been resolved, plus another 280 cases that have already been assessed by the social worker and psychologist, and are only pending medical evaluation, which is carried out from Gran Canaria. Furthermore, in 2024, 516 applications were resolved, and in 2023, a total of 332.
With the Third Addendum that will now be established, the service will be maintained in 2026, the necessary means will be adjusted, and the budget for the 2026 fiscal year will also be updated, in order to finance the salary costs of the personnel assigned to the commission, travel related to service needs, and training activities for the personnel involved.
542 files have been resolved in Lanzarote
Since the signing of the agreement with the Cabildo de Lanzarote on May 27, and until October 20, 2025, a total of 542 files corresponding to residents of Lanzarote and La Graciosa have been processed and resolved.
With the new addendum, the agreement's validity is extended through fiscal year 2026, and its purpose is modified. It is also adapted to the functions actually carried out, the staffing necessary to handle the real workload of files is increased, and the economic cost is updated, both due to the increase compared to the amounts in effect in 2025, and due to the planned assignment of new personnel.
The economic cost of subscribing to these addenda amounts to 310,944.53 euros for the first addendum for extension and modification with the Cabildo of Lanzarote and 166,000 euros in the case of the third addendum for modification and extension with the Cabildo of Fuerteventura.
These assignments are carried out in coordination with the multidisciplinary teams of the Disability Assessment Center of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
